Abstract In the current work, metallothermic reduction of natural quartz by magnesium has been studied at 1373 K under different reaction conditions, i.e. type, particle size, Mg:SiO 2 mole ratio and time. The microstructure products was to illustrate progression through scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques. X-ray diffraction analysis with Rietveld phase quantification used calculate change in amount phases conditions. results showed that strongly affects mechanism product characteristics such as content microstructure. At lower ratios, rate is fast beginning formation a layer consisting MgO, Si, Mg SiO 4 MgSiO 3 around particles limits diffusion. This phenomenon more noticeable for larger sizes where should diffuse longer distance towards core react it. higher significant Si–Mg liquid alloy formed during high mobility this cracking result significantly rate. Here intermediate not would be mixture either Si or phases.
